House Speaker Election Coverage: McCarthy loses historic second Speakership vote, House set for third ballot
Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has lost the second ballot for Speaker of the House.
He garnered 203 votes, with 19 Republicans voting against him. A candidate needs 218 votes to become speaker.
Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) got 212 votes.
The vote totals remained the same from the first ballot.
While McCarthy was expected to face stiff opposition from a small group of hardline critics, few predicted the sort of double-digit shellacking that happened on the House floor Tuesday.
The House, which hasn't needed more than one vote to elect a Speaker in a century, will now need to go to a third Speaker vote.
