Canada levelled its Davis Cup tie with Germany at 1-1 on Thursday, thanks to Félix Auger-Aliassime.
Auger-Aliassime, ranked No. 6 in the world, defeated Germany’s Oscar Otte 7-6, 6-4 in the second quarterfinal match of the day in Malaga, Spain, after teammate Denis Shapovalov had fallen earlier. Otte is ranked 65th.
Shapovalov, ranked 18th in the world, lost the opening match, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (2) to Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff, the 152nd ranked player on the ATP tour.
The event features players from eight different countries competing in the team vs. team format, eventually crowning a champion come Sunday.
The tie will now go to a third match, with Shapovalov teaming up with Vasek Pospisil to play Tim Puetz and Kevin Krawietz in doubles.
If Canada advances to the semifinals, they will face Italy, 2-1 winners over the United States.
