Firefighters respond
to hazmat incident
The Novato Unified School District temporarily halted sports practices Monday following a hazmat incident at the Novato High School pool.
A contractor was working on the pool – which, like the school, was closed for the week ahead of Thursday’s Thanksgiving holiday.
A “mix-up of chemicals” was blamed for the incident, said Leslie Benjamin, a spokesperson for the district. Details about which chemicals were used not immediately available.
Student athletes on campus were evacuated “out of precaution,” said police Lt. Sophia Winter.
Safety personnel tested the air that evening and deemed it safe to return, police said. Winter sports practices were scheduled to resume Tuesday, Benjamin said.

Northgate mixed-use project
The Planning Commission will hold a study session Tuesday on plans to redevelop Northgate mall.
The redevelopment plans calls for a mixed-use development with a town center and up to 1,422 new residential units.

The project is expected to be aired by the Design Review Board early next year. A draft EIR is scheduled for release this spring.
The study session will be held at 7 p.m. via teleconference. Go to cityofsanrafael.org/planning-commission-meetings.
