Doctor Who fans in tears as they say goodbye to Jodie Whittaker as Thirteen in dramatic regeneration scenes
DOCTOR Who fans have bid a tearful farewell to Jodie Whittaker as she bows out of the series after four years.
The actor became the Thirteenth official regeneration of the Doctor in 2018, and after a collection of specials and three series, she’s handed over her sonic screwdriver.
After her final words, Thirteen burst into a ball of yellow light to regenerate[/caption]In her final moments, fans knew she was set to regenerate after another showdown with her biggest enemies – with The Master (Sacha Dhawan), Daleks and Cybermen all making an appearance to take her down.
But for every enemy, The Doctor has a dozen pals from over the years, and after surprise appearances from old faces and even old regenerations, she was able to survive another day.
However, our favourite Gallifreyan didn’t emerge unscathed, and in an emotional goodbye to Yaz (Mandip Gill), Thirteen went off to see one last sunset by herself as her regeneration process kicked in.
As she stood on the edge of a cliff watching the sun go down, she reflected to herself: “The blossomiest blossom. That’s the only sad thing, I want to know what happens next.
“Right then, Doctor Whoever I’m about to be – tag, you’re it.”
With that, she exploded into a bright golden light as she changed form.
Fans were in tears as they said goodbye to Thirteen, and shared their love of the character who was the first female regeneration of the beloved leading role.
In fact, a lot of them needed some tissues for a good ol’ blub fest after the episode was complete.
“OMG!! That was brilliant. So many moments that made me smile. And moments when I had to hold back the tears. Farewell Jodie and roll on 2023!!!,” said one fan.
“I am in tears but that was an outstanding episode #DoctorWho,” said a second.
Another wrote: “Happily crying myself to sleep. She stuck the landing and then some. THE best regeneration since ‘I don’t want to go’.”
While one fan reflected on the legacy Whittaker leaves behind and wrote: “DAMN… #DoctorWho really got me crying more at this episode more than I did when the 10th Doctor regenerated… Childhood dream of a female doctor: Complete. (thank you Jodie Whittaker for a brilliant 5 years).”
This wasn’t even the biggest surprise to come from the episode, after it emerged that Sex Education’s Ncuti Gatwa was NOT the next regeneration.

In fact, The Doctor has regenerated backwards – and is now back in the body of Ten, aka David Tennant.
The episode ended with fans screaming with delight at one of the most beloved reincarnations of the time traveller, who will now appear for three episodes as the newly renamed Fourteen before Ncuti Gatwa officially takes over as Fifteen.
The episodes, which will be helmed by returning showrunner Russell T Davies, will air in 2023.
