Ringside Report’s Fight Report of Recent Results and Upcoming Bouts Around The World

By Donald “Braveheart” Stewart

UK

Due to the death of the monarch, the United Kingdom entered a period of official mourning which was to last 10 days. During the initial few days of this almost all sporting occasions were called off, including all boxing last weekend.

International headline in the UK
Saturday 10th September

In Montreal, super welterweight Mary Spencer knocked out Cynthia Lozano for the WBC silver and WBA international titles in 63 seconds! Spencer, at 37 years of age, is in a bit of a hurry and if there ever was an indication of just how much of a hurry, then 63 seconds kind of sums it up pretty well. Having previously fought for the IBF junior middleweight belt against Marie Eve Dicaire, Mexican Lozano was a tough pick, but Spencer made light work of it all and emerges as yet another all-action heroine with which we shall have to contemplate on the world stage. Ain’t that just dandy!

It’s the British and Commonwealth lightweight title fight between Gavin Gwynne and Craig Woodruff in Grays, Essex and live on Channel Five. The two Welsh boxers square off for Gwynne’s belts and whilst both have losses on their careers and very interesting backstories, the interest shall be in the ring on the night. Gwynne comes forward, Woodruff takes people on from the back foot, Gwynne’s pressure is likely to be significant and most seem to prefer the style of Gwynne rather than the possibility of Woodruff taking the belts.

Whilst we nearly had the big female fight the week before we now definitely have the big male trilogy the week after. This is a fight that will not end all trilogies as Saul “Canelo” Alvarez faces Gennady Golovkin in Las Vegas for a third time, but you cannot deny its significance. The first was a disputed draw. The second was a disputed win for Canelo. The third…

Both are coming off underwhelming fights. Both are that bit older. The feeling seems to be that Golovkin has faded the most and Canelo shall get the win, in his adopted home fighting town. If he does, expect it to be a points win which is … disputed.

I am a GGG fan, but you cannot get away from the quality that Canelo brings. He is the pound for pound chief and somebody nobody can discount. I am therefore hopeful, but fearful.

International fight of intrigue
Saturday 17th September

In Montreal we have the NABF heavyweight title fight between Arslanbek Makhmudov and former world titlist, Carlos Takam. Makhmudov last time out got a 6 round stoppage win over Mariusz Wach showing what we already knew – the guy can punch. Takam is a step up but one which shows him again in against a durable, though more able fighter than Wach presented. Most of us, me included, expect a similar 6 round finish in a bout scheduled for 10.

UK – Under the radar
Friday 16th September

The British middleweight title fight between Denzel Bentley and Marcus Morrison is in York Hall and live on BT Sport. Bentley is British champion for the second time, and this is his first defense. Whilst every boxer who steps in a ring has a chance, not many give Morrison more than that and Bentley is likely to retain his belt.

Mentioned in dispatches.
Saturday 17th September

In the Civic Hall, Grays, Essex, the heavyweight Nathan Gorman makes a return whilst light middleweight Lyndon Arthur takes on Walter Gabriel Sequira.
In Las Vegas the WBC super flyweight title is up for grabs between Jesse Rodriguez Franco and Israel Gonzalez, the middleweight WBC international strap is between Austin Williams and Kieron Conway, whilst the IBF North American title shall be settled between Ali Akhmedov and Gabriel Rosado.
There are also cards in York Hall, Glasgow and Rotherham.
