Preps of the week: Redwood reigns supreme at Stinson Beach Relays

Last week was marked by a number of cancellations as the temperature soared into triple digits from Monday through Thursday. Fortunately, cross country runners got a bit of a respite from the heat while competing at the Stinson Beach Relays on Wednesday.

Redwood ended up sweeping both races, getting big performances on the anchor legs from Daegan Cutter and Audrey MacLean.

Marin volleyball teams remained hot on the court as Tam completed a 6-0 week and Marin Catholic picked up a pair of impressive wins. Tam has won six consecutive matches and MC extended its winning streak to eight with MCAL play just around the corner.

The week wasn’t as kind on the gridiron, with Marin teams posting a 3-5 record. Marin Catholic and San Marin both leaned on their lead backs to pick up comfortable victories.

Daegan Cutter and Audrey MacLean, Redwood cross country

The Giants won both the boys and girls race at the Stinson Beach Relays with Cutter and MacLean posting the best times among boys and girls, respectively. Cutter had the fastest time of the day, completing his part of the race in 8 minutes, 27 seconds. MacLean posted a time of 10:06 to help Redwood overtake Archie Williams for the win.

Wesley Slavin, Tam girls volleyball

The Red-tailed Hawks completed a 6-0 week, running their record to 1-3 in the process. Slavin opened the week with a 34-assist performance as Tam swept aside Montgomery in three sets on Tuesday. The Red-tailed Hawks then hosted a 12-team tournament on Sunday which saw the hosts, Carondelet, Convent of the Sacred Heart and Terra Linda advance to the semifinals. Slavin averaged almost 25 assists per match, piling up 121 across five contests. Tam swept its first four opponents before needed a decisive third set to take down Carondelet — a North Coast Section Division II semifinalist last year — out in three sets.

Emily Greene, Marin Catholic girls volleyball

The Wildcats, who have dominated the MCAL for the past several years, appear to be rounding into form as the start of the league season approaches. Greene posted 18 kills and 31 digs across a pair of victories against Bishop O’Dowd and St. Ignatius last week. The Wildcats started the season 0-2 but have since reeled off eight consecutive wins. Bishop O’Dowd was the fifth seed in the NCS D-I bracket a season ago while St. Ignatius was ranked among the best teams in the region as the fifth seed in the NorCal Open Division playoffs — MC was the top seed and Branson was No. 7. MC travels to face Campolindo on Tuesday before opening league play against Novato on Wednesday. MC and Branson are scheduled for their one and only battle of the regular season on Sept. 20.

Charles Williams, Marin Catholic football

The junior running back touched the ball only eight times on offense against Casa Grande on Saturday but made all of those limited opportunities count. Williams had seven carries for 89 yards and scored three rushing touchdowns and also caught a 25-yard scoring pass in the Wildcats’ comprehensive 45-0 victory.

Charlie Singleton, San Marin football

With coach Dom DiMare looking to control the line of scrimmage and the clock in the second half, Singleton allowed the Mustangs to do both in a 28-14 win against Moreau Catholic Friday night. The Mustangs had moved the ball with relative ease for most of the first half but only had a 14-0 lead to show for it. Once Moreau Catholic cut the lead in half, DiMare called four consecutive run plays for Singleton, who moved the Mustangs into the red zone. After being limited to just 18 yards in the first half, Singleton ran for 101 yards as San Marin maintained control of the game.

Nina-Marie Sadie, San Domenico girls volleyball

Former Drake High coach John Hedlund has taken the reins at San Domenico this year and the team has registered some milestones already with outside hitter Sadie leading the way. Sadie had 14 kills, three aces and two blocks in a four-set win against College Prep this season. The Panthers, who had not won multiple games in a season since 2016, have four victories already this year. “She has significantly raised the level of the volleyball team this year, not only her own game but also the level of her teammates,” Hedlund said via email. “She is one of the hardest working players I have coached, her skill level is exceptional.” Sadie also had 22 kills in a recent five-set loss to San Francisco Waldorf.
