UFC 279 pits Nate Diaz against Tony Ferguson in a welterweight showdown— here's how to watch the main event on September 10

UFC 279 will stream live on September 10, with the main card starting at 10 p.m. ET on ESPN+.
Nate Diaz will fight Tony Ferguson in the main event after Khamzat Chimaev failed to make weight.

In an unprecedented move, UFC has shuffled the matchups for main event card of UFC 279 less than 24 hours before the event, with the headlining fighters now preparing to face entirely different opponents.

Khamzat Chimaev is one of UFC's up-and-coming welterweight stars, but weighed in at more than 7 lbs over the division's weight limit one day before his scheduled match with UFC veteran Nate Diaz. Diaz reportedly refused to face Chimaev in a catchweight match, leading UFC to renegotiate the scheduled fights on the main card.

Chimaev will now face Kevin Holland, who was scheduled to face Daniel Rodriguez in a catchweight fight at 180 lbs. Diaz will fight Tony Ferguson, who weighed in at 170.5 lbs for a welterweight match against Li Jingliang. Li Jingliang has agreed to fight Rodriguez, who is approximately 8.5 lbs heavier.

Chimaev versus Holland and Diaz versus Ferguson are both scheduled for five rounds; Ferguson and Holland were previously training for three-round fights at UFC 279. Jingliang versus Rodriguez will proceed as a three-round fight.

Chimaev is undefeated through 11 matches, with 10 victories coming by knockout or submission. Chimaev won by decision in his last fight, an April 2022 clash with Gilbert Burns that left both fighters bloodied after three rounds at UFC 273.

Diaz was once one of UFC's biggest welterweight stars, handing Conor McGregor his first UFC defeat in 2016 before losing by decision in a rematch. However, Diaz has only fought three times over the last five years, including back-to-back losses to Jorge Masvidal and current champion Leon Edwards. Diaz's contract with UFC is set to expire after his UFC 279 fight, leaving his future with the organization up in the air.

You can watch the main event of UFC 279 on ESPN+ at 10 p.m. ET on September 10. The main card requires an ESPN+ subscription ($10/month) and an extra pay-per-view fee of $75.

Before the main event, UFC Fight Pass subscribers can watch the early prelims at 6 p.m. ET. The prelims will then start at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN News and ESPN+
