Opinion: Player ratings from Tottenham’s 1-1 draw with West Ham United

Tottenham Hotspur continued their unbeaten streak in the Premier League this evening with a 1-1 result away to West Ham, but the performance left a lot to be desired for the Lilywhites. 

Let’s take a look at how the individual players got on:

Hugo Lloris – 5 – Didn’t really have too much to do between the sticks beyond a couple of simple claims. However, his distribution led to the West Ham goal, and a mistake with the ball at his feet almost cost Spurs another.

Emerson Royal – 6 – It has to be said, there wasn’t too much danger coming down the West Ham left, with Emerson doing his defensive duties very well, but he offered little to nothing in attack.

Davinson Sanchez – 5 – Similarly to Emerson, Sanchez’s actual defending was good, but with the ball at his feet he was completely lost out there. West Ham targeted him, which resulted in turnovers and long balls.

Eric Dier – 6.5 – I have to give credit to Dier for the way he bullied Antonio out of the game in the air, but with the ball at his feet he was uninspiring. As the sweeper, Spurs needed him to step out and create pockets for the midfielders.

Ben Davies – 6.5 – Offered much more on and off the ball than Sanchez on the other side, with a fair few overlaps past Perisic and into the box. However, West Ham’s right was more of a problem area for Spurs defensively.

Ivan Perisic – 7 – I want to give him a much higher rating because his attacking work one v one was so good. He put in a number of great crosses after beating his man. But he went to sleep for the goal and some sloppy play at the back almost cost Spurs again.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg – 6.5 – Fortunate that he ran off the injury, but Hojbjerg seemed to lose some of his drive after the ankle knock. Broke through the lines a few times, but a lack of end product and pace let him down. Worked extremely hard out there though.

Yves Bissouma – 6 – Looked very nervy in the first half with some poor first touches and then picked up a silly yellow card. But he really grew into the game and looked more controlled in the second 45.

Dejan Kulusevski – 7.5 – Tottenham’s best player for me. He was the only one who looked like he could consistently make something happen. Created Spurs’ opener with a nice pass to Kane on the overlap. Always uses the ball so effectively.

Heung-min Son – 6 – Really struggled to get into proceedings again. Nothing is falling his way at the moment. He is getting into areas to score a goal or two though, so I’m sure it will come. Just needs a scruffy one to get himself going.

Harry Kane – 7 – Created Tottenham’s only goal with a nice overlapping run and drilled cross into the box, so a slight boost to his rating for that. While he linked midfield and attack well in the first half, he barely touched the ball in the second.

Substitutes: 

Richarlison – 5.5 – Came on for 20 minutes and definitely added a spark, but without every really driving into the final third.
