Lawsuit stating jail forced workers to 'segregate' for Derek Chauvin ends in $1.5 million settlement
Eight correctional officers of color are due $1.5 million after Minnesota's Ramsey County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously on Tuesday to settle a lawsuit claiming the officers weren't allowed to guard Derek Chauvin simply because they aren't white. Chauvin, a white man, was convicted of murdering George Floyd and pinning the Black father under the cop’s knee for more than nine minutes. Adding insult to injury, when Chauvin turned himself in to the Ramsey County Adult Detention Center in St. Paul, people of color working at the detention center were racially discriminated against, according to the lawsuit.
"On behalf of the Ramsey County Board of Commissioners and this entire organization, I extend our profound apologies today to Devin Sullivan, Mohamud Salad, Timothy Ivory, Anabel Herrera, Stanley Hafoka, Nathaniel Gomez-Haustein, Cedric Dodds and Chelsea Cox," Commission Board Chair Trista MatasCastillo said in a statement on Tuesday.
