LAPD officers shoot, kill armed suspect in Pacoima
Los Angeles Police Department officers exchanged gunfire with a man suspected of trying to carjack a vehicle in Pacoima and killed the man, authorities said today.
Foothill Station officers responded to multiple 911 calls at about 10:40 p.m. Sunday about a man with a gun near Laurel Canyon and Van Nuys boulevards, according to a statement tweeted by the LAPD. The callers reported a man in his 20s pointed a gun at several people and tried to carjack a motorist at that intersection.
Arriving officers encountered the suspect who fired at the officers and the officers fired back wounding the suspect, officials said.
Paramedics took the suspect to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, officials said. His name was not available.
The suspect’s handgun was recovered at the scene and booked into evidence, police said.
No officers, witnesses, victims or bystanders were injured, police said.
An investigation was underway at the scene and the area was expected to be closed to traffic for several hours. Laurel Canyon Boulevard was closed between Paxton and Pierce streets and Van Nuys Boulevard was closed between Haddon Avenue and the Golden State (5) Freeway.
