Record-breaking 8st cod as long as a man stuns seaside town

A MONSTER cod as long as a man and weighing 8st stunned fish lovers in a seaside town.

They flocked to snap up a piece of the 1.8m record-breaker.

Codzilla — which could be 20 years old — was line caught in deep water off Iceland by the trawler Bergey.

A crowd gathered as it was delivered to Grimsby Fish Market, Lincs, last Monday.

Seafood buyer Nathan Godley paid £165 for the 51kg beast after hearing about it through a salesman for the trawler.

He said: “My other cod purchases that day were about £10 each.

“It’s about ten times as big as usual cod.

“Never in my life have I bought a fish so large.

“Although it’s hard to verify, it could be a British or north-east Atlantic record.”

He proudly displayed the fish in his shop window — letting customers take photos of it — before selling off portions to happy locals.

Nathan, managing director of Premier Seafoods, said: “We got 17 kilos of best ­fillet off it.

“I sold it to my customers on Tuesday and Wednesday and it’s been a big hit.”

A FISHERMAN who helped catch cod for 650million servings of fish and chips is retiring after 53 years.

First mate Charlie Waddy, 63, celebrated his farewell with crew from trawler Kirkella.

It now boasts a cinema but Charlie used to share a cabin with ten men and eat the fish they caught.

He threw potatoes at Icelandic gunboats to stop them cutting lines in the 1970s cod wars.
