Fire crews battle several grassfires across Oklahoma City metro area
OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – Oklahoma City Fire Department officials say crews have responded to 15 grassfires on Saturday.
"All of the fires today were definitely more dangerous and fast spreading," said Sean Cobb, the Oklahoma City Fire Department Shift Commander.
One of those fires was ignited when a powerline fell in the 2000 block of SE 59th in Oklahoma City. Another at Highway 7 at 9 mile hill, eight miles west of Marlow in Stephens county, temporarily closed down the highway because the grassfire eliminated visibility.
A grassfire near Northwest Expressway and North Morgan Road spread more than 10 acres.
Crews also battled fires at 9810-10199 NW Expressway, 3101 NE 50th St., 2330 NW 10th St., 5350-5399 SW 29th St., and 1524 SW 61st St. Terrace.
“Our humidity levels [were] below 20% and the winds were gusting upwards to around 30 miles an hour. When those are combined, then any little spark has the potential of rapidly spread," said Cobb.
