Consumer tip: Be careful of auction scams
The Better Business Bureau has been receiving reports about fake auctions designed to steal consumers’ money and sensitive personal information. Scammers advertise auctions for expensive items, such as cars or boats. Consumers have to register to bid, providing personal information and sometimes a driver’s license. Then, they are notified that they won the auction. They transfer payment, but never receive the item.
While some auctions are legitimate, consumers should do their research to avoid getting scammed. If an auction site purports to be affiliated with the government, call that government branch to verify the auction is real. Search for reviews of private auction sites and check that they have a valid license. Make sure you understand the policies of the auction site and any additional charges you may incur, such as shipping charges. Even when an auction site is legitimate, don’t get swept up in the excitement of the auction and stick to your spending limit.
