Chelsea is STILL not for sale and Roman Abramovich remains owner despite shock statement over ‘stewardship’ of club
ROMAN ABRAMOVICH remains Chelsea’s owner despite his bombshell statement that he has handed over the stewardship of the club.
The Russian billionaire announced the shock news on Saturday night following his country’s invasion of Ukraine.
A number of Russian oligarchs have had their assets frozen by the British government due to events in Ukraine, though Abramovich has not been sanctioned.
So far there are no signs of that taking place, and sources close to the 55-year-old insist he has done nothing that would make him liable to sanctions.
Abramovich, who bought the West London outfit in 2003, stunned fans on Saturday night as he passed control of the Blues to their six trustees.
His announcement, which didn’t mention Ukraine, comes on the eve of Chelsea’s Carabao Cup final against Liverpool at Wembley on Sunday.
Those now overseeing the Champions League holders are chairman Bruce Buck, Women’s boss Emma Hayes, head of the National Lottery Sir Hugh Robertson, equality campaigner Piara Powar, lawyer John Devine and director of finance Paul Ramos.
Chelsea’s fans have begged Abramovich not to leave as they labelled him as the ‘best owner in club football’.

But despite distancing himself from his beloved side he remains owner and can still fund the club as long as he is not sanctioned.
Abramovich has always insisted he has no interest in selling Chelsea, and it is understood nothing has changed.
Abramovich’s full statement read: “During my nearly 20-year ownership of Chelsea FC, I have always viewed my role as a custodian of the Club, whose job it is ensuring that we are as successful as we can be today, as well as build for the future, while also playing a positive role in our communities.

“I have always taken decisions with the Club’s best interest at heart. I remain committed to these values.
“That is why I am today giving trustees of Chelsea’s charitable Foundation the stewardship and care of Chelsea FC.
“I believe that currently they are in the best position to look after the interests of the Club, players, staff, and fans.”
