On Monday, January 31, 2022, a source revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that Rachel Maddow is set to step away from her show starting on Friday, February 4, as she works with NBCUniversal to develop new projects.
Maddow is expected to make the announcement during her show on Monday evening and will be succeeded by a rotating group of hosts.
She will continue to appear during special event coverages, such as the State of the Union address on March 1.
On August 12, 2021, sources told The Daily Beast that Maddow would allegedly be leaving MSNBC in the future.
According to the site, six sources close to the situation confirmed that Maddow is seriously considering leaving the network.
The site speculated her future plans, writing, “Instead [of moving to a competitive network], she has been intrigued by opportunities in the streaming and podcasting space, which would allow her more freedom, time for her personal life and for other projects.”

“We don’t comment on employee matters,” MSNBC spokesperson Lorie Acio wrote by email in response to the speculations at the time.
Maddow dropped hints regarding professional burnout during a 2019 interview with the New York Times.
“I’m realizing now – 10, 11 years into this – that it’s fine to work long days,” she told the Times.
“But it’s not good for you to work incessant long days, five days a week, 50 weeks a year for 10 years.”
Sources reported at the time that the NBC team is doing all they can to keep her on board.
Despite the rumors; on August 24, 2021, Business Insider reported that Maddow would be staying at MSNBC after reaching an agreement on a new contract.
Maddow has since signed a new multi-year deal with MSNBC’s parent company, NBCUniversal.
But that’s not the long-term plan, as the five-day-a-week show will come to an end sometime next year as Maddow shifts gears to more of a weekly format, CNN reported citing two sources with knowledge of the deal.

Maddow originally found success in radio and served as a substitute host for several networks before landing her own program.
The Rachel Maddow show began in 2008, replacing Verdict with Dan Abrams for the network’s 9pm slot.
Following its debut, the program became the highest-rated show on MSNBC on several occasions.
This also made Maddow the first openly gay or lesbian host of a primetime news network in the United States.
She also serves as the network’s special event co-anchor alongside Brian Williams.
