Mets to Attend Cole Hamels’ Showcase Friday Afternoon
According to Jon Heyman of MLB Network, the New York Mets will be one of the numerous teams attending veteran left-hander Cole Hamels showcase on Friday afternoon in Frisco, Texas.
Heyman reports that among many other teams, the New York Yankees and Philadelphia Phillies will also be in attendance.
Hamels, of course, spent the first ten seasons of his big league career with the Phillies. He was a key piece of the 2008 World Series championship team, taking home the NLCS and World Series MVP.
He posted a 3.30 ERA over his ten seasons in Philly. Hamels spent four seasons in Texas, and then two with the Cubs before ending up back in the NL East.
He signed with the Braves prior to the 2020 pandemic shortened season, but only made one start after suffering a shoulder injury during spring training. He went unsigned this offseason, and is now holding the workout with hopes of catching on with a pitching-needy team.
It would be hard for Mets fans to root for Hamels, but it certainly couldn’t hurt to take a flier.
The Mets’ big three in the starting rotation of Jacob deGrom, Taijuan Walker, and Marcus Stroman has been outstanding this season. Outside that, however, the depth has taken a significant hit on the injury-front.
Over the first-half the season, they lost Joey Lucchesi, David Peterson, Jordan Yamamoto, Robert Gsellman, and Thomas Szapucki amongst others to the injured list.
Rookie right-hander Tylor Megill has filled in nicely, and veteran Carlos Carrasco will be making a rehab appearance on Thursday night with the Brooklyn Cyclones but they could certainly use all the depth they can get.
The veteran left-hander has been one of the more effective starters in the game when he’s healthy, posting a 3.43 ERA and 2560 strikeouts over 15 big league seasons. We’ll see what happens if all comes back well on Friday afternoon.
