#15 Oral Roberts Golden Eagles vs. #7 Florida Gators Predictions and Picks

If you watched Oral Roberts play on Friday, you’re probably scratching your head as to how they were a #15 seed in the tournament. The Golden Eagles made it known to the Buckeyes that they came to play by jumping out to an early 7-0 lead. One thing that’s certainly clear about Oral Roberts is that they’re going to be true to themselves no matter who their opponent is. The Golden Eagles rank 41st in the country with 74.6 possessions per 40 minutes, and they were right around that pace with 74.1 possessions against a Power Five school in Ohio State.

There’s no quit to an Oral Roberts team that will have no problem shooting their way out of any struggles they might encounter. The Golden Eagles are ranked 12th in three-pointers attempted per game (28.1), but more importantly, they lead the NCAA with 10.9 three-point field goals per game. Their style of play will benefit them when they take on the Florida Gators in the second round. Florida plays a bit slower than Oral Roberts as they average 72.4 possessions per game. However, the Gators are ranked 212nd with 6.8 three-point field goals per game.

One team that could give provide some insight into this game would be the Alabama Crimson Tide. The Crimson Tide is second behind Oral Roberts with 10.7 three-point field goals per game, and they’re also tied for first in three-point attempts with 30.4 per game. When Florida played Alabama in January, they were beaten handily 86-71. Despite holding teams to 30.5% from the three-point line this season, Florida allowed Alabama to shoot 40% from behind the arc. Now, I’m not saying the Golden Eagles are the Crimson Tide by any stretch, but I am saying that they’re the kind of team that can present problems for the Gators, thanks to their ability to shoot from a distance.

In the build-up to the game between #16 Hartford and #1 Baylor, Hawks head coach John Gallagher gave his 10-10-10 rule as part of the keys to the game for an underdog to pull off an upset:

  • Make at least 10 three-pointers.
  • Commit fewer than turnovers in the game.
  • Limit the opponent to fewer than 10 offensive rebounds.

Gallagher said if an underdog can accomplish at least two of those goals, they’ll have a chance to win the game. Oral Roberts did exactly that against Ohio State with 11 three-pointers and committed only six turnovers in the game.

The Golden Eagles are ranked 10th in three-point field goal percentage (38.8%), so you can be sure that they’ll continue to take their shots because one thing we know is that shooters shoot.

Florida couldn’t keep Alabama close to their opponent season average of 30.5% from the three-point range, and I don’t think Oral Roberts will be too deterred or intimidated in this matchup. The underdog is definitely live in this game, and teams seeded 10th through 16th that pull off an upset in the first round are actually even likelier to win in the second round.

I’ll take my chances with the underdog Golden Eagles.

The Pick: Golden Eagles +8
