I feel guilty that I’ve been in Japan away from my family during the pandemic
DEAR DEIDRE: I MOVED away from my family four years ago to teach English in Japan. I loved every minute of it until this pandemic arrived. Now I feel riddled with guilt and I’m really missing my parents and two sisters.
I am 25 and have a lovely girlfriend here but my mood is getting lower because I haven’t been able to see and hug my family.

I do call but that doesn’t feel like enough.
I desperately want to go home and I’m finding it hard to focus on life here.

DEIDRE SAYS: Guilt is part of the grieving process – and this is a very upsetting time. But please be reassured you have nothing to feel bad about.
I do hope you can be with your family soon but until then, keep calling them.
They will appreciate your conversations and you will be supporting them more than you realise.
I’m sure your family feel bad for you, knowing you are on your own without them.
No one will resent you.
