I don’t trust my mother-in-law to look after my baby girl and keep her safe
DEAR DEIDRE: MY mother-in-law wants us to allow our baby girl to stay with her but I don’t trust her to keep her safe.
I’m a 28-year-old woman and my husband is 27, but he finds it hard to stand up to his mum.
I don’t trust my mother-in-law to keep my baby girl safe[/caption]She is 61 and came to stay unannounced when our daughter was five days old.
She stayed a week but left in a rage because my husband told her off for smoking while holding our baby.
She’s a drinker too, opening the wine at lunchtime.
I’m still on maternity leave so we don’t need childcare.

DEIDRE SAYS: There is no way your mother-in-law sounds safe to care for your baby daughter.
Smoking around her is dangerous and so, of course, is her drinking, which is clearly a serious problem.
Explain to your husband that your daughter won’t be safe with his mum and the two of you must stand firm together.
He can find support through We Are With You (wearewithyou.org.uk) who help those affected by addiction.
