MATCH REPORT: Poor third period costs Rocks in Bristol
Report: Bristol Flyers 96 Glasgow Rocks 54
A poor third-quarter display by Glasgow Rocks allowed Bristol Flyers to go on and take the points as the home side romped to a 96-54.
Picking up only three points compared to Bristol’s 37 was the clear indicator of where the game got away from Gareth Murray’s men, who have no time to feel sorry for themselves as they head to Plymouth Raiders tomorrow.
The tally in the third 10 is the lowest by any team in the BBL since at least 2009 and a stat that will leave everyone disappointed, but the players keen to make amends for that when they return to the court.
The opening quarter was a close affair and Julius Van Sauers got the first four points of the night with a jump shot and a driving layup to get things going.
It was panning out to be an interesting spell and with Marcus Delpeche tallying nine points from Bristol’s total of 18, leading by a point at the end, there wasn’t much to separate the sides.
Rocks were ahead a couple of minutes into the second quarter as Boban Jacdonmi and David Mpondo scored two point lay-ups and it looked to be one to keep the watching fans entertained.
Isa Brandon and Mpondo picked up five each and coach Murray with four, but it was the home side who were ahead 40-33, firing in six points in the final couple of minutes, with Rocks finding themselves with work to do.
The start of the second half couldn’t have gone any worse as Flyers, led by Delpeche, netting nine points without reply, really making life hard for the visitors.
Van Sauers (1) and Brandon (2) were the only players to pick up points in a forgettable spell, while Bristol surged ahead, picking up 37 for themselves, the highest by any team since 2017.
From there, it was a case of making the best of it and while there was only a point between the teams in the final quarter, the horse was long gone before the gate had been bolted.
Van Sauers succeeded with two free throws to start, but Panos Mayindombe responded with four for Flyers, although it was more of a contest.
Brandon picked up five, while Fergus Harte weighed in with four, along with Mpondo as Rocks limped to the finish and left coach Murray with plenty to dissect as they hit the road to Plymouth.
