Mel C reveals an eating disorder and depression during her Spice Girls fame made her ‘desperately unhappy’
MEL C has spoken of her past struggles with eating disorders and depression while in the Spice Girls.
The 46-year-old singer, who rose to fame as Sporty Spice in the 90s group, revealed the scrutiny that the band came under led her to feel “desperately unhappy”.
Mel C has opened up on her battle with eating disorders and depression[/caption]She told The Observer: “The lows of being famous were devastatingly hard. I was vulnerable, and the tabloids were cruel and heartless.
“It pushed me to the point of illness. I was struggling with an eating disorder and suffering from depression.
“I had everything I’d ever dreamed of, and was desperately unhappy. It’s often forgotten that people in the public eye are human.”
Earlier this year, Mel also revealed how a “scuffle” with Victoria Beckham sparked her battle with depression and eating disorders.

The musician started starving herself but went from anorexia to binge-eating.
She told Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs: “I think that is where the start of some of my problems came. I had to be very, very strict with myself.
“I couldn’t allow myself to relax because if I did I might mess it all up.”

She previously turned down £2million for their proposed comeback four years ago, saying being in the group made her depressed.
Meanwhile, it’s believed the band could reshoot the video for their smash-hit debut Wannabe to mark their 25th anniversary.
However, Victoria Beckham, 46, is said to be “exceedingly unlikely” to be involved.

A source said: “The Spice Girls were hoping to hit the road in 2021 to mark their big anniversary but now it’s not possible because of the pandemic.
“They’re all in touch weekly and are trying to come up with new ideas on how they can do something special to mark the big day.
“Mel C suggested doing something around Wannabe — including the idea of possibly re-working the video for social media.
“There are so many options and nothing is off-limits. They want to give the fans something special.”
