ARD Podcast: America Three Months Before the Election
Three months from now, Americans will not only determine the political course of their home country, but also the fate of the international community. German public broadcaster ARD featured GMF’s Thomas Kleine-Brockhoff in a podcast on the November election.
According to Kleine-Brockhoff, the international system has already changed markedly since Donald Trump took office. ”Trump is a nationalist. He wants to move towards a nationalist world order and he has partially achieved that. The five biggest countries in the world are being governed by nationalists,” Kleine-Brockhoff argued.
In the case of the global coronavirus crisis, nationalist thinking impeded effective crisis response. “With this pandemic, we experience the first big global crisis under the protectorate of nationalism. The consequences are clearly visible. States do not cooperate, and this is not an accident but a design feature of the new order,” Kleine-Brockhoff noted.
The fact that the United States has left a number of multilateral agreements underscored Trump’s disdain for international cooperation. “According to Donald Trump, there is no ‘world community’,” said Kleine-Brockhoff. As a result, he said, “this means that there is indeed no world community.”
