Harry and Meghan officially shut down Sussex Royal charity to focus on new projects
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are officially shutting down their Sussex Royal foundation as they focus efforts on new projects.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have filed paperwork to formally dissolve both the charity and its linked company, as they work on establishing their new charitable organisation, Archewell.
It comes after Queen Elizabeth said they could no longer use ‘Sussex Royal’ in their branding following their decision to step down as senior working royals in March.
The couple is ‘incredibly grateful’ for the support and guidance of Sussex Royal’s trustees who included the broadcaster Kirsty Young, a source has said.
Their charity’s main project during its 12-month run was Travalyst, a travel initiative that aimed to explore and improve conservation efforts, tackle climate change and help local communities.
It is now operating as an independent non-profit organisation in the UK to help the communities that rely on tourism rebuild amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The Sussex Royal charity will formally enter a period of ‘solvent liquidation’ which will see all trustees step down from their roles, apart from Harry who will remain as a director and trustee until the liquidation process is complete.
In the meantime, the duke and duchess have been urging top executives to stand in solidarity with groups demanding a boycott of Facebook.
It emerged last week the royal pair had spoken with a number of organisations leading the Stop Hate for Profit campaign, which is targeting the social media site’s failure to do more to remove hate speech.
The Duke of Sussex apologised for institutional racism and said that not enough has been done for younger generations to make society a fairer place on Thursday.
In a surprise video message at The Diana Awards ceremony, he said children and young adults working to end racial inequality gave him the ‘greatest hope’ that things could change.
