Tommy Sykes had a second-best 92 tackles for Chaminade football in 2019, but the recent graduate is tackling a much different opponent now. Instead of using his arms to wrap up the ball carrier, he’s taking COVID-19 head on with a disinfecting fog machine.
Strapped with a device on his back, like something out of the Ghostbusters movie, Sykes is disinfecting houses, local businesses and cars to create a safer community amid the coronavirus pandemic.

“I’ve learned that life is more than football, so I wanted to do something to help the community,” Sykes said of his new venture.
Sykes’ father owns Slim Body Fitness gym in Chatsworth and used the services of The Cleaner to disinfect the gym for safe use, which is owned by Jason Cohen, Sykes’ uncle. Under the tutelage of Cohen, Sykes invested in his own disinfecting fog machine that kills 99 percent of bacteria and viruses. Former Crespi football player Dylan Schlopy is Sykes’ partner.
“We can disinfect a car in about three minutes, and do a 3,000-square foot space in about 10 minutes,” said Sykes. “I’m also learning how to be an entrepreneur.”
The solution is a multi-purpose disinfectant 100 percent non-toxic and natural, and can be used in residences, commercial institutions, daycare centers, nurseries, and restaurants. Sykes claims the non-alcoholic nature of the solution keeps surfaces bacteria free for about a week.
Recently, Sykes was able to fog multiple cars and the garage of celebrity comedian Cedric the Entertainer.
“I fogged his Bentley, Tesla, lowrider and Mini Cooper,” Sykes said.
Sykes works everyday and is set to make a good amount of money this summer, not bad for an 18-year old high school graduate. He charges $20 per car and varies the cost of a space pending on the square footage. The service includes a free bacteria test before and after.
Sykes is committed to play defensive back at NCAA Division II Western State Colorado University. The school plans to have in-person instruction this fall and have adjusted the calendar one week, according to Sykes. In regards playing football, which is in jeopardy due to the virus, he’s optimistic.
“We may lose the first game of the season due to the virus,” said Sykes. “But I’m hopeful I’ll be playing football this fall.”
