Andrew McCutchen pushes back at owners in funny video
Friday, Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Andrew McCutchen became the latest star to suggest the MLB owners haven’t negotiated in good faith as they attempt to reach an agreement for an abbreviated season.
However, rather than issuing a strong statement like many others, including Max Scherzer, have done, McCutchen let a comedic video do his talking:
McCutchen, a five-time All-Star, finds himself at a strange juncture in his career. He’s 33 years old and was limited to just 59 games in 2019 after tearing his ACL in early June. From that sense, he’s likely as eager as anyone to get back on the field, well aware that he’s probably closer to the end of his career than the beginning. That said, he’s entering year two of what was supposed to be a three-year/$50 million deal and Spotrac estimates that he’s earned over $75 million in his career. So given the cache that McCutchen has built up both as a player and a person in the league, he’s in a position where he’s able to lead the charge of players that appear to be holding their ground in tense negotiations.
MLB commissioner Rob Manfred guaranteed that there will be a season earlier this week, though it increasingly appears that it could come with him unilaterally imposing a 48-game season. Not much thought appears to have been given to the idea that players could refuse to report under such an arrangement.
