The A Word’s Christopher Eccleston rants that he’s ‘sick of seeing a load of blokes’ on TV
THE A Word actor Christopher Eccleston had launched a rant centred on the amount of males on telly.
The former Doctor Who actor, who plays grumpy grandad Maurice Scott in the BBC’s drama mini series, didn’t pull any punches when he said the saturation of male protagonists was “dull.”
In a candid chat with the Telegraph, the London based actor, 56, branded himself a “dinosaur” in the acting sphere.
He said: “I’ve been in the industry a long time.
“Stories about men shouldn’t be at the centre of things anymore and hopefully the industry is changing.
“It gets a bit dull, doesn’t it? Tuning in and it’s a load of blokes again.”
“I’ve had a good run of it, but things are changing.”
Christopher, who starred in The A Word since the first series, added: “I’ll always be available for toxic male roles.”
His latest show centres on members of the Hughes family and their initial communication difficulties with five-year-old, Joe, his character’s grandson, who suffers from autism.
Addressing how the three series have portrayed the condition, Christopher added to the publication: “Life goes on when you have a child with autism, or a child with Down syndrome.

“I think they like that we’re not po-faced about it.
“They seem to feel recognised by the series, which is lovely. It touches people.”
He has previously hinted the show will run for many years, as it track’s Joe’s journey through adolescence.
The A Word returned for a third series on May 5, 2020 at 9pm on BBC One.
