Normal People fans go wild for ‘most realistic sex scene ever’ packed with full-frontal nudity
BBC Three viewers are celebrating the “most realistic sex scene ever” as the eagerly anticipated new series Normal People lands.
Based on the wildly popular 2018 book of the same name, fans are rushing to praise the show for its relatable sex scenes and full front nudity for both men and women.
One scene in particular had fans excited as they congratulated writers on exploring conversations around safe sex and consent.
The show is set in Ireland and follows the relationship of young lovers Connell (Paul Mescal) and Marianne (Daisy Edgar-Jones).
Staying true to the book, the couple has a lot of sex with the depiction of the romps being hailed as very realistic.
The first time the pair hook-up they collapse into giggles as Connell struggles to remove Marianne’s bra.
They then have a discussion about using a condom and then about consent before doing the deed.
Connell tells Marianne: “If at any point you want to stop, we can obviously stop.”
Viewers called for this scene to become mandatory in high school classrooms to teach young people about consent.
One Twitter user wrote: “Well, however #NormalPeople turns out, its depiction of safe sex and consent in Ep2 should be mandatory viewing for all teenagers.”
Many more people took to Twitter to praise the show for its relatable sex scenes.
“I’ve watched the first two episodes of #NormalPeople and as much as I have small issues it’s great, and the first sex scene is one of the truest things I’ve seen on television,” one person said.
Another wrote: “Marianne and Connell doing a sex scene better than 98% of full time porn actors and actresses. Take a seat pornhub.”
A third wrote: “Holy penis & balls I was not expecting the graphic sex scenes and full frontal nudity!!”
The realistic sex scenes can be credited to “intimacy coordinator” Ita O’Brien who came in to work with the actors.
It became Ita’s job to make sure that not only were they realistic when adapted to the small screen, but that shooting them was comfortable for all involved.
Ita who has worked as an initimacy coordinator on shows such as, Gangs of London and Sex Education, explained that while her work might sound dry, it’s really important.
She told The Guardian: “Daisy, Paul and I would talk through where they could touch each other, where they could kiss each other – as an example, in the early scenes Daisy had to wear a wig, so she had a rule about Paul not running fingers through her hair.”
