Woman cut ex-boyfriend’s mother’s head off with steak knives and left it in kitchen sink
A woman cut her ex-boyfriend’s mother’s head off with steak knives then left it in her kitchen sink, prosecutors said.
On Thursday, Rachael Hilyard, 38, was found guilty of murdering Micki Davis in Witchita, Kansas on April 9, 2017.
Prosecutors said Hilyard beat Davis then cut her head off with two steak knives after an argument over a painting at Hilyard’s home.
Hilyard called Davis on the day of the attack and told her to come pick up some items belonging to her son, Jeremy Rush, who she used to date. Rush was reportedly in prison at the time of the incident.
Davis took her nine-year-old grandson to Hilyard’s house, but an ‘altercation’ broke out between the two over a painting.
According to Davis’s grandson, who was a key witness in the case, Hilyard attacked Davis in the home’s garage.
The boy said he ran to his grandmother’s truck and dialed 911. Hilyard followed him and asked him who he was calling. When he told Hilyard he called 911, she went into the house, grabbed a steak knife out of the kitchen drawer and walked in to the garage where Davis was lying motionless.

Police arrived a short time later and found Hilyard covered in blood crouching in her bathroom.
A coroner indicated that Davis may have been alive when she was beheaded. The cause of death was listed as sharp force injuries to the neck, according to The Witchita Eagle.
Throughout the case, Hilyard’s mental state was questioned, but her sanity was not used as a defense because Kansas has incredibly restrictive laws for citing mental illness in criminal cases.
When asked why she cut Davis’s head off, Hilyard began crying and said: ‘Because the things told me I didn’t have much time and I had to get her head away from her body so her soul could get free, so her soul could get out and go to heaven.’

‘Thank God that she is off the streets so this doesn’t happen to anybody else’s family,’ Rush said after the jury announced their verdict.
