Five spring cleaning bargains to help with the January household chores

HOW are those household New Year’s resolutions holding up?

If your post-Crimbo clean and clear didn’t exactly get off to a good start last week, there’s still time to recover your resolve without forking out.

Household chores can get neglected over the festive period, leaving a big build up

And the chore of cleaning feels a whole lot better when you’re not splashing out on expensive products.

SPILL THE CLEANS: For alcohol stains on wood, pop a few drops of cooking oil (£1.10, Asda), on to a cloth and rub in.

For red wine spillages that have dried on a carpet, mix Asda’s 69p bicarbonate of soda with water, spread a thick layer over the mark, cover with a cloth and weigh down overnight.

Much cheaper than Vanish’s Gold Oxi carpet spray, £6.
SAVE: £5.31 on carpet spray

OVEN AND OUT: Oven Pride’s Deep Cleaner is £3 at Tesco, so I’ll be taking Mrs Hinch’s advice and using The Pink Stuff, £1 at Sainsbury’s.

Apply with a scourer and leave for five minutes. Then, soak your racks in washing up liquid and warm water, apply more Pink Stuff and rinse.

SAVE: £2 on oven cleaner

TREE-MENDOUS: I can’t be the only one who’s thrown away Christmas lights because they’ve got too tangled.

Now I wrap them around an old kitchen roll tube while packing up. I also pop small baubles and ornaments in an egg box to keep them safe.

SAVE: Around £10 on lights

COOL IDEA: Cheese and turkey can create a lingering pong in your fridge.

Open your pot of Asda bicarb and leave it in on a shelf — it should soak up odours within three days. A steal compared to Croc Odor’s fridge deodoriser, £3 at Sainsbury’s.

SAVE: £2.31 on fridge deodoriser

PRO-SECCO TIP: To get your champagne glasses gleaming give them a wipe with a drop of white vinegar.

Stardrops’ white vinegar spray is 89p at The Range, cheaper than Restaurant Crystal Clean’s glass cleaner, £23.05 at Amazon.

SAVE: £22.16 on glassware cleaner
