[Football] Seven Williamson Football Players Named to USCAA All National Football Team
The United States Collegiate Athletic Association announced its 2019 USCAA All National Football team and Williamson was once again well represented, as for the second straight year they placed seven members on the squad. The team is the USCAA's equivalent to the NCAA's All-American squad.
Seniors David Williams (SR/Philadelphia, PA) (RB), Jack Gibson (SR/Rutledge, PA) (CB), Hunter Thornton (SR/Upper Chichester, PA) (C) and Quincy Williams (SR/Conshohocken, PA) (DT) were joined by juniors Chris Carney (JR/Coatesville, PA) (DE), Gregg Kimmel (JR/Folsom, PA) (OLB) and Joe Spillman (JR/Secane, PA) (DE) on this year's team. With seven players named to the squad, it tied the record for Williamson selections set by last year's team.
A USCAA National team member in 2018, David Williams rushed for 581 yards on 71 carries (8.2 yds/carry) in five games (before a season ending injury) for an average of 116.2 yards per game. He also added four receptions for 34 yards and led Williamson in scoring with eight touchdowns. In addition, he returned two kicks for 43 yards and led Williamson in all-purpose yards, averaging 131.6 all-purpose yards per game. Rushed for over 1,600 yards during his three-year Williamson career. He leaves as one of the all-time great running backs in school history.
A three-time USCAA National team member, Jack Gibson leaves as perhaps the finest cornerback in Williamson's 119-year-old football legacy. A true "shut-down" cornerback, he ended his career with 12 interceptions, good for second on the school's all-time list. Also, a three-time First Team Seaboard Conference selection. Opposing teams literally did all they could to throw away from his direction. He became the first Williamson football player to have an interception in the first game of the year in all three years! Ended up with 12 tackles, two pass break-ups and two interceptions in 2019.
A returning USCAA National team member from 2018, Quincy Williams finished tied for the team lead in tackles in 2019 with 46. He also tied for the team lead in tackles for loss with seven. A dominant run stopper, he also added two sacks and one forced fumble and nine hurries on the year. He was a team captain and was Williamson's Athlete of the Year last school year. He is also an outstanding heavyweight wrestler.
Hunter Thornton was converted from tight end to center right after camp and he flourished as the team's starting center. He graded out as the team's top offensive lineman and helped lead an offense that averaged 234 yards rushing per game and 5.7 yards per rush. A true leader, he was one of the team captains. He did not allow a sack all season.
A dominant force on defense for us in 2019. Gregg Kimmel had 32 tackles, including four for loss, one interception, three pass break-ups. Equally impressive against the run and the pass. He was a huge part of a Williamson defense that limited opposing teams to an average of just 215.1 yards per game.
Lightning quick off the end, Joe Spillman had a team leading three sacks, while adding an amazing 10 hurries. He finished the year with 33 tackles and tied for the team lead in tackles for loss with seven. Also added a forced fumble and a blocked kick. An incredibly disruptive player, opposing teams were forced to game plan for him each week.
Chris Carney had an incredible year for the Mechanics. He finished tied for the team lead in tackles with 46, including six tackles for loss. He also led the nation in fumble recoveries with four, while forcing three fumbles himself. Added two sacks and four hurries, along with three pass break-ups. A huge reason for the team's success in holding opponents to an average of just 107.3 yards rushing per game.
"I'm proud of each one of these student-athletes and all that they represent for Williamson both on and off the field," commented Williamson head coach Dan Drake.
"They are a real tribute to what Williamson is all about and each of them is very deserving of this very special honor."
Williamson finished the year 5-2, after going 6-1 in 2018.
