Australians who played for Aston Villa

Over Aston Villa’s 145 years they have had plenty of Australians represent them. If you’ve ever wondered who were the best Aussie players to ever play for Aston Villa, using the help of Australian sports experts and their article, we’ve combined the list of 5 outstanding Aussie players that have competed with the legendary English club.

Mile Jedinak

We’re starting off our list with the most recent player that actually was released from Aston Villa during the summer of 2019. Mile Jedinak has been with Aston Villa since 2016, after joining from Crystal Palace.

Jedinak helped the team get to the Premier League last season, and in total made 80 appearances with the team. He played at centre-back and defensive midfield.

Towards the end of his career at Aston Villa, he found playing time quite hard to come by and was limited to just one minute in the play-offs. Despite this, he is greatly loved by Villa fans. Mile even shared with the press that if it was up to him he would have stayed with the team. Jedinak is now 35 years old and is actually considering coaching as his next step in his career.

Chris Herd

Next on our list is Chris Herd. A football player from Perth, Australia. He actually began his professional career at Aston Villa where he played from 2012-2015. Herd managed to get to Aston through the Australian club Bayswater City SC, back in 2005. The deal was made up of a two-year youth training, after which he signed a one year deal with the club.

His debut was special because it fell right on the game between Aston Villa and Manchester United when he came on as the last substitute. After Herd left the team he was flooded with questions regarding his decision. According to the player from Perth, this was the way for him to relaunch his career and try out his skills somewhere new. During his time in Villa, he gained a lot of supporters who have been following his journey ever since.

Jordan Lyden

Jordan Lyden has been involved with football all his life. He played youth football for ECU Joondalup up until 2012, then moved to Aston Villa when he was 16 where he was part of the Aston Villa academy. He made his senior debut in 2015 when the team was struggling in the Premier League. Lyden had his first proper Premier League match on February 14th, 2016 against Liverpool F.C.

His career at Aston Villa was full of ups and downs, accompanied by multiple injuries throughout that time. He left the club shortly, while on a loan to Oldham Athletic. In total, he made 4 appearances during his 14 years at the club and hoped to have a fresh start after coming back in 2019. But just like in his previous years, he got an injury 10 days after returning.

In March, this year he made an announcement that he was let go from the club and joined Swindon Town. He got a big reaction from his fans across social media who were wishing him more success on his next step.

Shane Lowry

Like some other players on this list, Shane got his start as a youth player in ECU Joondalup and is also from Perth. Signed for Aston villa in 2005 with Chris Herd, whom we mentioned above. He made nine appearances for Aston Villa reserves during his first season.

The Aussie footballer spent 4 years at the Football Club, and was on the loan at Plymouth Argyle in 2009, at Leeds United in 2010, at Sheffield United in 2011 and Millwall in 2011-2012. Shane Lowry also appeared as an unused substitute in two matches for Aston Villa in 2010-2011 season but that’ was about it for his career at Aston Villa.

Brett Holman

This is the last player on our list and he played for Aston Villa for only a short period of time from 2012 to 2013. Holman is an Australian professional footballer who last played for Brisbane Roar in the A-League as an attacking midfielder.

During his years at Aston Villa, he was on a pre-contract agreement. Brett Holman became an official player on July 1st, 2012 and score during his debut against Burton Albion. But despite the somewhat successful season, he was released by mutual consent at the end of the 2012-2013 season. He went off to join AI Nasr in Dubai instead.
