Oliver Kahn to succeed Rummenigge as Bayern CEO
One legend will succeed another as Bayern Munich have confirmed that Oliver Kahn will replace Karl-Heinz Rummenigge as the club’s CEO from 2022.
Rummenigge has been the chairman of the board since 2002 but announced earlier this year that he will step down when his contract expires on 31 December 2021.
Oliver Kahn has signed a five-year deal and will officially join Bayern’s supervisory board on 1 January 2020, before taking over from Rummenigge 12 months later.
The 50-year-old enjoyed a superb playing career with Bayern Munich after he joined the club as a player from Karlsruher in July 1994.
He went on to make 781 appearances for the club, winning the German Bundesliga title eight times, the DFB Cup on six occasions, and the 2000-01 UEFA Champions League and 1995-96 UEFA Cup. The Champions League was won on penalties against Valencia at the San Siro in Milan, Italy.
Oliver Kahn was also in the Germany squad that won UEFA Euro 1996. He went on to win 86 caps for the national team, helping Germany reach the 2002 FIFA World Cup final, where he became the first goalkeeper to win the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player.
Widely considered to be one of the greatest goalkeepers of all time, Oliver Kahn finished third in the voting for the Ballon d’Or in both 2001 and 2002.
