The Accident – Four unanswered questions from episode one including are the teenagers to blame for the deadly explosion?
THE Accident kicked off on channel 4 and immediately got viewers talking with its dramatic and emotional scenes about a Welsh construction site explosion.
But it also left some questions that we need answering in the next episode – here’s what we MUST find out.
Four unanswered question from episode one of The Accident
How many people died?
In the first part of The Accident we saw an explosion rip through a construction site that a group of youths – headed up by Polly’s daughter Leona – were vandalising.
She wants to cause mayhem at the site, as the project is one her local councillor father Iwan is behind.
We saw the teenagers enter a room with gas canisters and they then proceeded to vandalise the room with spray paint.
The last we heard was Leona asking if “anyone had a lighter” for her cigarette – then there was a MASSIVE explosion that could be heard throughout the village.
A few minutes later, after the locals had rushed to the site, the building collapsed – which echoed the twin Towers.
We then saw the aftermath with casualties and bodies being brought out of the building.
We know that Angela’s daughter died and Debbie’s partner Alan was killed – but how many other people lost their lives?
This wasn’t clear and we need to know in order to asses the scale of the tragedy.
Why did Polly immediately blame the construction company?
Straight after the explosion, Polly – who Leona’s mum and the wife of Iwan who had backed the constriction project – was seen yelling at site owner Harriet, saying “it’s your fault.”
She blamed her for doing the construction “on the cheap.”
As the wife of Iwan, maybe she knows something about the site – had they being cutting costs and doing a botched job which could have caused the explosion?
This brings us to our next point…
Can the teenagers be blamed for the explosion?
The teenagers – mainly Leona – were the ones who were smoking around the gas canisters AND the ones who broke into the site.
Does this mean they are responsible?
They were after all the ones who were trespassing.
They weren’t allowed on the site and they had spray paint and lit cigarettes.
Is Polly a victim of domestic violence?
Another interesting part of the story was Polly’s relationship with her politician husband Iwan.
After she leaves the hospital – where Leona is being treated for horrific injuries following the blast – she sees her husband in the kitchen with a model of the site and how it would’ve looked if the explosion hadn’t happened.
She tries to talk to him and instead he goes into a fit of rage and pins her to the floor and punches her hard in the ribs.
He then climbs off her and starts crying.
Polly immediately comforts him as though this is what she does when he hurts her – does he beat her regularly?
This could be why his daughter Leona hates him so much and she wanted to vandalise the construction site, as way of hurting him.
