‘European girl’, 10, drowns in hot tub in Dubai after hair gets stuck in filter
A ten-year-old girl drowned in a hot tub in Dubai after her hair got ‘entangled’ in the filter.
Her ‘motionless’ body was found ‘pinned to the bottom’ of the three feet deep tub by her father, who gave her permission to use it, authorities say.
After noticing she had been gone for a while, he rushed over to the scene at their home in the Bur Dubai district.
Police have not revealed the child’s nationality, describing her only as ‘European’, Gulf News reports.
Dubai Police director of crime scene investigations Colonel Ahmad Humaid Al Marri said a CSI team investigations of the girl’s home found her hair had become ‘entangled’ in a filter.
Further probing revealed an engineering ‘flaw’ caused the hot tub’s drains to produce strong ‘swirls’ which ‘affected the water’s flow dynamic and as a result sucked the hair easily’.
Authorities also found there was unequal suction power across the hot tub’s filters.
Colonel Al Marri said children should ‘always be taught to stay away from drains’, which long hair and even limbs can easily get suck in.
He added: ‘Children should always be supervised around water bodies especially swimming pools, hot tubs and open beaches.’
