Edenton Drops Two Against Pilots
The Peninsula Pilots swept a doubleheader from the Edenton Steamers on Wednesday night at Historic Hicks Field.
Home runs were flying out of the ballpark, eight balls left the yard between the two teams.
In game one, the Pilots jumped out to an early two run lead off of Edenton’s starter,Isaiah Paige.
Clams trailed by as many as four and rallied to cut the deficit to one when Ian Walters hit a solo homer in the bottom of the 6th.
Peninsula tacked on three insurance runs in the top of the seventh and went on to win the first half of the twin billing, 8-5.
Trey Morgan picked up his second win in less than a week against the Clams.
Game two got off to a quick start with Nick Biddison sending one over the centerfield wall on the first pitch of the game.
Riley Hogan followed with a solo homer of his own to give the Pilots an early 2-0 lead.
Steamers evened the score at two when Quincy Hamilton launched his 12th home run of the season, plating Alex Alders.
In the bottom of the 2nd, Kenny Oyama drove in a run with an RBI double to give Edenton their first lead of the evening. Clams would tack on another and were leading 4-2.
Kross Robinson was called on with two outs in the first when Walker Cleveland departed with an injury. The NC native went five innings allowing five runs walking four and striking out nine.
The Pilots were able to plate four runs in the top of the 6th to re-take the lead from Edenton.
Hogan once again burned the Steamers with a bases-loaded single that tied the game. Cole Secrest followed with an RBI single of his own which put Peninsula up 9-7.
In the bottom half of the frame, Ian Walters hit a two-run shot with two outs to tie the game at 9.
Neither side would score in the 7th so the game headed to extras.
Pilots had runners one 1st and 2nd to begin the inning due to the international tie-breaker rule.
John Dowless struck out the first batter he faced and then issued a walk. Once again, Hogan delivered the big knock for Peninsula, driving a ball to right center field for a bases clearing double.
Edenton made it interesting in the bottom of the 8th. The Clams had bases loaded and Walters at the plate with a 1-2 count. The Kentucky native lined a pitch off the left field wall to clear the bags and cut the deficit to 1.
Hamilton went down on strikes and Edenton left the tying run in scoring position to end the game. Pilots won 13-12 and picked up their 3rd victory at Historic Hicks Field.
The season series between the Pilots and Steamers ends at 8-8 on the year.
Peninsula now holds a one-game lead over the Teal and Black for the second playoff spot in the North.
