Walks Lead to Defeat; Clams 1 Game out
EDENTON, N.C
The Edenton Steamers fell 4-3 to the Morehead City Marlins in their final regular season home game of 2019. With the loss, Edenton is one game behind Peninsula for the second playoff spot with one game remaining.
The Clams had a 3-2 lead entering the eighth, but five walks lead to two runs and allowed Morehead City to re-take the lead. Morehead jumped out to a 1-0 lead after an error by the Steamers, but the Teal and Black responded quickly.
With two outs in the fourth, Quincy Hamilton picked up Edenton’s first hit of the game. Rob Weissheier followed with an RBI single to tie that game at 1 after Hamilton stole second. Justin Drpich then worked a 3-2 count and lined a ball into the right-center field gap, plating two and giving the Clams their first lead of the night, 3-1.
The Marlins grabbed another run in 5th to cut the lead to 3-2.
To begin the 8th, Alex Theis walked two batters and Kross Robinson was called upon to try and limit the damage. The right-hander walked the first three batters he faced to bring in two runs and give Morehead a 4-3 lead. Tyler Blomster delivered 4.2 scoreless innings with six strikeouts in relief to silence the Clams’ bats and hold onto the victory.
Up next, Edenton travels to Morehead for the final regular season game of the season Saturday night. To get into the playoffs, the Clams have to win and have Peninsula lose at Holly Springs.
