Cristian Romero’s injury timeline revealed: Tottenham captain may have played his final game

There has been an update on the extent of Cristian Romero’s injury after the Tottenham man was forced off in the second-half of the Lilywhites’ 1-0 loss against Sunderland.

The Spurs captain was in tears as he left the pitch after his knee collided with the side of Antonin Kinsky’s face. This came after the centre-back was pushed into the goalkeeper’s path by Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey.

Roberto De Zerbi admitted after the game that Tottenham desperately need Romero for the relegation battle, with the Lilywhites having just six league matches to avert disaster.

However, the Spurs head coach has been handed a major blow regarding his captain, a day after his first game in charge of the Lilywhites.

Cristian Romero could miss the rest of Tottenham’s season

Argentine journalist Martin Arevalo has now revealed that the 27-year-old’s scans have confirmed that he has suffered a knee injury.

He declared that following the diagnosis, the centre-back is expected to be sidelined for between five and eight weeks. That means he could miss the final six games for Tottenham, whose final league game of the season is on May 24 against Everton.

However, it is good news for Argentina, with the Spurs star expected to return in time for the World Cup to help his country defend their title.

Romero could have played his final game for Spurs

If the 27-year-old is ruled out for the final six matches, the clash against Sunderland could be his final appearance in a Tottenham shirt.

This is because reports are suggesting that Romero is on the radar of many big clubs around Europe, with his future at N17 appearing uncertain even if the club avoid relegation.

In fact, the centre-back’s father himself declared a few days ago that Romero’s contract has a release clause of around $50-$70m (£37.8m-£53m) this summer.
