'Critical Fire Conditions' in 9 States, 55 mph Winds and Low Humidity Expected
The National Weather Service has issued red flag warnings in nine states across the Midwest. These advisories highlight a risk of "critical fire conditions" due to increasing wind speeds and falling humidity levels.
The red flag warnings will remain in place from 12 p.m. CDT to 9 p.m. CDT on Monday, April 13. During this period, "any fire that develops will catch and spread quickly" in most affected regions.
Red Flag Warnings in Wyoming, Nebraska, South Dakota, Kansas, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and Georgia
Northern Texas is facing the most severe fire conditions this week, with winds upwards of 55 mph expected in some regions. With humidity levels sinking to 9% and temperatures rising to 90, outdoor burning is not recommended due to increased risk of uncontrollable fires developing.
"A combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures will contribute to extreme fire behavior," the NWS warns.
Similar conditions are emerging throughout the Midwest as temperatures rise on Monday afternoon. Kansas, Colorado, and New Mexico are facing similar warnings to avoid outdoor burning and report any fires that are spotted promptly.
High temperatures also bring an increased risk of health issues such as dehydration and heatstroke, so residents are encouraged to drink plenty of water and remain inside whenever possible.
Outdoor burning is also "strongly discouraged" in Georgia, where the NWS has also issued a hazardous weather outlook. "With dry fuels and ongoing drought conditions, high fire danger conditions can be expected. Please refer to your local burn permitting authorities whether you may burn outdoors. If you do burn outside, use extreme caution."
During a red flag warnings, residents are advised to avoid any activity that could generate ambient heat or fire embers. These include mowing grass, grilling, smoking outside, reflecting heat, or burning (via Be Ready Butte).
Residents are also advised to sign up for social media alerts from local authorities in case conditions change throughout the day.
