On the morning of April 11, 2026, Variety reported that John Nolan had died at the age of 87 of unknown causes. For superhero movie fans, he was best remembered for portraying Douglas Fredericks, a member of the Wayne Enterprises board of directors, in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight Rises. The uncle of Christopher Nolan, he also appeared in two of his other movies, Following and Dunkirk. Hours after the news broke, Chrispher Nolan released an emotional statement to TMZ.

Long before Christopher Nolan became one of the most powerful directors in Hollywood history, John Nolan had already built an impressive career. Born on May 22, 1938, he gained attention when he starred as the titular character in the 1970 BBC miniseries Daniel Deronda, based on George Eliot's novel of the same name. He had earlier portrayed the character for two years in a Royal Shakespeare Company stage production of the story.
Nolan would go on to have a respected career on the stage, as a member of both the National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company. He also enjoyed an extensive onscreen career, with his first IMDb credit stemming from 1967. He memorably had notable television roles in Person of Interest, Doomwatch, and Shabby Tiger. Person of Interest was a series created by John Nolan's nephew and Christopher Nolan's brother, Jonathan Nolan.
