With his crown of horns, demonic snarl, and piercing yellow eyes, it was almost impossible for Darth Maul not to become the de facto red-and-black face of Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace— even with less than seven minutes of screen time. But when he whipped out a double-bladed lightsaber, paired with one of the most cinematic duels in the movie series, his destiny as one of the most iconic villains in the Star Wars franchise was cemented.
Although his time was seemingly cut short in live-action after he was bisected by Obi-Wan Kenobi, the former Sith Lord was biding his time in the shadows in the animated realm of the galaxy, waiting for the next opportunity to strike back. And how exactly does a disgraced member of The Dark Side do that? By building a criminal syndicate, of course.
What is the plot of Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord?
Okay, so remember when we mentioned that Darth Maul was — literally — chopped? You didn't hallucinate that happening in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace. However, the Dark Side has a funny way of keeping its villainous minions semi-immortal (hatred apparently cures aging in the Star Wars universe). As such, Maul is still terrorizing the galaxy during Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord's events, which transpire post-Clone Wars, pre-Rebellion, but he's wielding his legendary lightsaber to maintain power as a cosmic crime boss in Janix, a neon-soaked planet of depravity operating beyond the Empire's reach. And although Maul no longer has his Sith Lord title intact, the logline suggests that he hasn't entirely given up on the idea of a lifetime seeking revenge, either: he's seeking an apprentice in Janix, too.
Why Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord hits:
Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lordis for Star Wars fans who need a break from the prophetic platitudes of the Skywalker Saga (profound as they were, they're starting to feel trite) and who also need something grounded in realism despite the far-far-away setting, à la Andor. The series is a high-octane crime thriller with a hard PG rating, never holding back on highlighting the dark underbelly of the Star Wars universe, despite being targeted to more "mature" kids (Common Sense Mediarecommends it for ages 10+) and swapping bullets for blasters. Visually, the series is also a stunner, no longer confined to the clunkiness of The Clone Wars' earliest iterations of the animation style that would define the franchise's toons. Backgrounds are atmospheric and ominous; foregrounds are highly detailed and gritty. And the action sequences? Smoother than a tall glass of Bantha milk.
Who shines in Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord?
Maul voice actor Sam Witwer's mere screams shine so glaringly that they power the lightsabers on-screen (seriously), so it's difficult not to mention the Star Wars franchise veteran from the get-go. Witwer has lent his vocal stylings to the menacing galactic warrior's striped visage since Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, as well as the live-action flick Solo: A Star Wars Story. Needless to say, Witwer is in his element. But, don't be fooled, Witwer's not doing any heavy lifting— the voice cast is stacked with impressive talents, including the critically-acclaimed Brazilian actor Wagner Moura (as Brander Lawson), the instantly recognizable Chris Diamantopoulos and Dennis Haysbert (Looti Vario and Master Eeko-Dio-Daki, respectively), and The IT Crowd alum Richard Ayoade (as Two-Boots).
When and where to stream Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord:
The first two episodes of Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord, created by Lucasfilm head Dave Filoni, are available to stream now on Disney+. Episodes will release weekly on Mondays in pairs, with Episodes 3 and 4 coming up on Monday, April 13, 2026. The 10-episode series will conclude its first season on May 4th, which is fitting, you know, given the May-the-4th of it all.
