President calls for unity and resilience in Easter message

President Nikos Christodoulides on Holy Saturday delivered a message of unity, faith and perseverance, as Cyprus prepared to celebrate Easter.

Addressing the nation, the president described Easter as the “victory of life” and the culmination of the Passion, urging people to draw strength from faith, hope and resilience in their daily struggles.

“I sincerely wish that the light of the Resurrection blesses your lives, your families and your loved ones,” he said, adding that faith remains a guiding force, particularly in challenging times.

Christodoulides noted that as church bells ring across free Cyprus to mark the Resurrection, the occasion is once again overshadowed by the continued division of the island.

“Unfortunately, the bells of the Resurrection will not ring in our occupied villages and towns,” he said, referring to the ongoing consequences of the 1974 Turkish invasion.

He said thoughts remain with refugees, the families of the fallen and missing, and those still enclaved, reiterating that the state would “never compromise with occupation”.

The president stressed that efforts to resume negotiations on the Cyprus problem would continue, based on the agreed UN framework and in line with European Union principles.

“No matter the difficulties or the intransigence we face, we are working to overcome obstacles,” he said, adding that a solution must deliver a free, reunited and secure country for future generations.

He reiterated the vision of a state where all legal citizens – Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Armenians and Latins – can enjoy fundamental rights and freedoms across the entire island, in line with the rest of Europe.

Christodoulides also pointed to government efforts to strengthen the country internally and externally, highlighting policies aimed at boosting the economy, defence and security, while enhancing Cyprus’ international standing.

He said reforms were underway to modernise the state and improve people’s daily lives, with investments in education, healthcare, social welfare, housing and employment.

At the same time, he said Cyprus continues to pursue an outward-looking foreign policy, building alliances and maintaining its role as an active EU member state.

“I am proud of our country, which can play a leading role and receive support when needed,” he said.

Turning to broader global developments, the president acknowledged that ongoing geopolitical tensions, war and human suffering in the region are fuelling uncertainty and fear.

“In these unpredictable times, the need for seriousness, unity, prudence and responsibility is more evident than ever,” he said.

He added that the government has demonstrated its ability to respond decisively to crises in recent years, strengthening the country through a comprehensive governance programme focused on stability and preparedness.

Christodoulides emphasised that policies would continue to place people at the centre, with the aim of maintaining a strong and resilient economy, a fair and modern state, and social policies tailored to citizens’ needs.

In closing, he urged solidarity and compassion, calling on people to support one another and embody the message of Easter through acts of love and generosity.

“Let us move forward together, as a society, with unity and respect for all,” he said. “Happy Easter, and may freedom come soon.”
