UN envoy condemns deadly attack on civilians in western Afghanistan

A deadly attack on civilians in Herat has drawn strong condemnation, highlighting ongoing security threats and repeated targeting of vulnerable communities in Afghanistan.

Naseer Ahmad Faiq condemned a deadly attack on civilians in Injil district of Herat, warning that the incident underscores persistent insecurity and the ability of extremist groups to carry out coordinated assaults without accountability. He called for those responsible to be identified and brought to justice.

Gunmen on motorcycles opened fire on civilians near a Shiite shrine in the Deh Mirai area on Friday afternoon, killing at least seven people and wounding 13 others, according to official figures, while local sources reported higher casualties. Most victims were said to be from the Shiite community.

No group has claimed responsibility so far, but similar attacks in recent years have often targeted Shiite and Hazara communities in western Afghanistan, with Islamic State Khorasan Province previously claiming some incidents.

Herat has witnessed repeated attacks on minority communities, reflecting broader security challenges and the presence of militant groups operating across the region.

The latest attack highlights ongoing risks to civilians and raises renewed concerns about the protection of minority groups amid continuing instability.
