US delegation arrives in Islamabad for high-stakes talks with Iran
Reports indicated that senior US and Iranian delegations have arrived in Islamabad for high-stakes talks aimed at ending military tensions, in what could shape the course of war or peace.
The negotiations come amid mutual accusations of ceasefire violations, with deep divisions still in place as Iran insists talks cannot begin without firm commitments on Lebanon and sanctions relief.
At the same time, Washington has expressed doubts about reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a key issue on the agenda that underscores the strategic and economic stakes of the negotiations.
According to Reuters, the US delegation includes JD Vance, Vice President Donald Trump, along with special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, who arrived in Islamabad on Saturday.
On the Iranian side, the delegation is led by Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and includes Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, who arrived in Pakistan’s capital on Friday evening.
The high-level talks are taking place against a backdrop of deep mistrust, with both sides accusing each other of failing to uphold previous understandings and commitments.
It remains unclear whether Iran’s conditions and US reservations could derail the talks, which, if held—would mark the highest-level engagement between the two countries since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Meanwhile, tight security measures have been put in place in Islamabad, as Pakistan seeks to bolster its diplomatic standing by mediating while projecting stability in a volatile region.
