Man Utd suffer fresh transfer setback, 26yo German star signs new contract
Manchester United have suffered an early transfer blow ahead of the summer.
The Red Devils had identified the need for defensive reinforcements, with plans to bring in a new centre-back.
Borussia Dortmund defender Nico Schlotterbeck was one of United’s transfer targets.
Dortmund have now officially confirmed that the 26-year-old has signed a new contract that will extend his stay until 2031.
His previous deal was set to expire in 2027. United could have signed the German international for £26 million to £31 million this summer.
Signing a new centre-back is not a priority
Harry Maguire was recently rewarded with a new contract, extending his stay at Old Trafford.
The deal also includes an option to prolong his tenure by a further 12 months.
The England international has fully earned the extension following a remarkable resurgence over the past two seasons.
United are expected to play with a back-four system going forward. Lisandro Martinez, Matthijs de Ligt, Maguire, Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven are all set to compete for the two starting centre-back positions.
Tyler Fredricson and Godwill Kukonki are two young defenders in the academy who have the ability to play for the first team.
Given the depth already available, investing heavily in another centre-back may not be the most pressing need.
INEOS would be better served by prioritising reinforcements in other key areas of the squad.
Midfield remains a major concern, while the team would also benefit from the addition of a left winger and a full-back.
Signing a new centre-back could be a key agenda for the summer of 2027.
