Leeds United forward Willy Gnonto has admitted that he has wanted to play more for the Whites this season to help the club in their survival quest.
Gnonto, who has been part of the Whites squad since joining from FC Zurich in 2022, played an important role during the 2024/25 campaign under Daniel Farke, helping the club finish top of the Championship and secure automatic promotion to the Premier League.
He pushed hard to leave Leeds in the summer of 2023, leading to one Whites legend saying it would take a long time before the fans forgave him, but parting ways with his agent in early 2024 did build some bridges.
This season proving to be a difficult one for the Italian at Elland Road, as he is yet to score a Premier League goal in 16 appearances and has not started a league game since November against Manchester City, when Leeds suffered a 3-2 defeat.
Gnonto’s only goal across all competitions this season has come against Derby County in the FA Cup.
The forward acknowledged his own high expectations and admits that he would have liked to have been able to feature more for Leeds this season.
He also pointed to the remaining fixtures as an opportunity for him to make a difference and said the squad are confident they can avoid relegation from the Premier League.
Gnonto told BBC Radio Leeds: “I always have high expectations of myself.
“Obviously I wanted to play more and help the team more, but it hasn’t really been possible.
“We have seven games left. I want to try to help the team as much as I can and hopefully be on the pitch as much as I can too.
“Everyone can play a part in the final run-in because everyone is in a good position and most of the team is fit.
“We feel everyone is ready and we are pretty confident we can [stay up].”
The 22-year-old is entering the final two years of his contract and continued struggles for minutes could lead to speculation over a potential move in the summer transfer window, although his immediate focus will be on helping Leeds stay in the Premier League.
After 31 rounds, Farke’s side sit 15th with 33 points, just four points above 18th-placed West Ham United, with former top flight striker Chris Sutton recently expressing his confidence over their prospects.
The Peacocks must also balance their league fight with FA Cup commitments, having beaten the Hammers in a penalty shootout last weekend to reach the semi-final for the first time in 39 years, where they are set to face Chelsea at Wembley.
They have faced the Blues twice this season, recording a 3-1 win and a 2-2 draw, and a Leeds legend has already said that Farke’s side should not be afraid of them.
