China pressed Iran to accept ceasefire, officials say
China played a decisive last-minute role in persuading Iran to accept a ceasefire and de-escalate regional tensions, according to a report by Bloomberg.
The report, published on Thursday, said Iranian officials highlighted Beijing’s influence following the announcement of a truce mediated by Shehbaz Sharif, which aimed to halt escalating hostilities.
Donald Trump also acknowledged China’s involvement, saying pressure from Beijing in the final stages of negotiations was critical in securing Iran’s agreement to the ceasefire.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif thanked China for its support, while the White House said Beijing’s engagement at “senior levels” contributed significantly to the diplomatic breakthrough.
The role of China reflects its growing influence in regional diplomacy, particularly as tensions between Iran, United States and Israel remain volatile.
Meanwhile, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned that continued Israeli strikes on Lebanon could undermine the ceasefire, adding that violations would prompt “clear costs and strong responses.”
Analysts say China’s intervention signals an increasing willingness to shape outcomes in Middle East crises, as global powers compete for diplomatic leverage in a rapidly shifting security landscape.
The fragile ceasefire continues to face risks, particularly over disputes involving Lebanon and enforcement mechanisms, raising uncertainty about its durability in the coming days.
