Jason Day's Family Suffered Great Tragedy When His Father Died Young
Day lost his father at a young age. He explained to Qantas Magazine how his coach became a father figure in his life, but not at first.
"I was 12 when I met my coach and caddy, Colin Swatton. My dad, Alvin, who introduced me to golf, had died six months earlier and I was going off the rails at home in Rockhampton. Mum took a second mortgage so I could board at Kooralbyn International School, south of Brisbane," he told the magazine.
Day's life took another turn for the better when he met his future wife, Ellie.
According to Qantas Magazine, the pair were in their teens when they first met. She was 19 and he was 17 when they met.
Ellie Day has shared photos of the couple together on Instagram. "Ready to cheer this guy on this year, starting tomorrow! 15th season here we go baby. ???????? #teamdayallday thank you @gypsee.photoandfilm for these rare shots of us together! ????" she wrote in 2022.
In 2024, she wrote a gushing post about Day for their anniversary: "✨Fifteen years ✨ five babies. So much life and LOVE. I can’t believe it. We were just a couple of kids who didn’t have a clue about anything. Eternally grateful for the grace and goodness of God," she wrote.

"This life is a precious gift and my greatest hope is that every heart that comes in contact with our home really does feel the love of Jesus, just like my Uncle Bern said in our wedding ceremony. ???????? (also so thankful for the video my uncle captured when we didn’t even ask for it back then!) thanks for coming along for the ride, friends. ????"
Jason Day Described How He Knew He Wanted to Be With His Wife 'For the Rest of My Life'
When Day met Ellie, she was waitressing at an Irish pub, Mavis Winkle’s, in Twinsburg, Ohio.
"I was too shy to talk to her but I thought she was gorgeous. I found out that Colin had her number and I texted her: 'This is Jason Day from Australia. Do you remember me?'” he told Qantas.
"She said yes and we started talking. When I went back in 2007, she watched me play. I won. She had no idea what golf was. Our first date was at a restaurant called Applebee’s in Columbus, Ohio," he added.
"Afterwards, all I wanted to do was play golf and see Ellie. I knew I wanted to be with her for the rest of my life. I was 21 when we got married," said Day. "Golfers are selfish and your personal life can get hit by the sacrifices you make to be a better player. To have a person who’s so solid, who loves me as much as anyone could, means everything."
