Lebanon declares mourning after Israeli strikes kill 254 in a day
Lebanon declared a national day of mourning after Israeli strikes killed 254 people and wounded more than 1,100, deepening tension over the Iran ceasefire.
Lebanon declared Thursday a national day of mourning after Israeli airstrikes killed 254 people and wounded 1,165 others in just one day, according to Lebanese officials. The bombardment marked one of the deadliest single-day escalations in the country in recent weeks and came just hours after a fragile U.S.-Iran ceasefire was announced.
Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said Lebanon would mobilize all political and diplomatic resources to stop what he described as Israel’s “killing machine,” as strikes hit crowded parts of Beirut and residential areas. The scale of the casualties pushed the crisis beyond the military front and into a wider humanitarian and political emergency.
The attacks have also intensified confusion over the terms of the ceasefire between Washington and Tehran. U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu both said Lebanon is not part of the agreement, arguing that Israel’s war against Hezbollah remains separate from the Iran track.
That position directly contradicts Pakistan, which helped mediate the truce and publicly said the ceasefire applied “everywhere,” including Lebanon. The dispute has become one of the clearest signs that the agreement remains politically fragile and open to sharply different interpretations by the parties involved.
The latest bloodshed has deepened fears that the Lebanon front could derail any broader diplomatic progress between Iran and the United States. Over more than five weeks of war, Lebanese authorities say at least 1,739 people have been killed and 5,873 wounded, underlining how quickly the conflict is widening despite efforts to contain it.
The national mourning declaration reflects more than grief; it is also a warning that Lebanon is being pulled deeper into a regional conflict whose supposed ceasefire has yet to produce calm on the ground. Unless the dispute over Lebanon’s status is resolved, the truce may remain little more than a pause in name.
