Cameron Diaz Confirmed to Star in Beloved ‘80s Movie Sequel
Cameron Diaz is back!
In 2014, a decade after stealing the Guinness World Record for World’s Highest-Paid Actress from Julia Roberts, Cameron Diaz made the decision to walk away from it all. In a 2020 conversation with Gwyneth Paltrow, as reported by Vanity Fair, Diaz explained that stepping away from her busy career gave her “peace in my soul… Because I was finally taking care of myself.”
Why Did Cameron Diaz Retire From Acting?
“It’s a strange thing to say. I know a lot of people won’t understand it,” Diaz continued. “But it’s so intense to work at that level and be that public and put yourself out there. There’s a lot of energy coming at you at all times when you’re really visible as an actor and doing press and putting yourself out there. I’m sensitive to some energies and not others, but I do get the overwhelming energy of the attention being put towards me. I stopped, I really looked at my life, and I saw what I had been [missing].”
In the years following her 2014 retirement, Diaz married Good Charlotte rocker Benji Madden in 2015, and the couple has welcomed two children—a daughter in 2019 and a son announced in 2024.
In 2016, she wrote her second book, The Longevity Book: The Science of Aging, the Biology of Strength, and the Privilege of Time – A Holistic and Research-Based Guide to Womens Health in Midlife, and launched her own organic wine brand, Avaline, in 2020.
When Did Cameron Diaz Return to Acting?
In 2025, Diaz made her long-awaited return to the screen for the appropriately titled Netflix action-comedy Back in Action, alongside Jamie Foxx.
Since then, the four-time Golden Globe nominee has been careful about the roles she is choosing. On Friday, she’ll be seen alongside Keanu Reeves, Jonah Hill, and Matt Bomer in Outcome, an Apple TV movie directed and co-written by Hill. She has also signed on to resurrect one of her most beloved characters, Princess Fiona in Shrek 5, which is currently filming and expected to be released in 2027.
Now, Diaz is making millions of ‘80s teens’ dreams come true by signing on to star in the long-awaited sequel to Jeff Kanew’s 1989 cult teen comedy hit, Troop Beverly Hills.
Was Troop Beverly Hills a Hit?
The original Troop Beverly Hills starred Cheers’ Shelley Long as Phyllis Nefler, a socialite who is going through a very public and contentious divorce. And who decides to become the leader of the local Wilderness Girls troop in order to maintain a deeper connection to her daughter, Hannah (played by Jenny Lewis).
Though the movie was not a financial success when it was first released, it soon developed a large cult following through cable screenings and its home video release. The film was particularly lauded for its underlying feminist message. Now, actress Clea DuVall is planning to revive the original movie as both writer and director, with help from Diaz who will assist in developing the project and will take a starring role, according to Variety.
Diaz will produce the film with her business partner Katherine Power, who also co-created their Avaline wine brand. Though the details of the project are being kept under wraps, it has been confirmed that the movie will be a sequel versus a reboot. No potential release date has been announced.
