Raptors have no issues handling the Heat in high-stakes matchup

The Toronto Raptors delivered exactly what they needed in a potential playoff preview, riding a dominant performance from Scottie Barnes and Brandon Ingram to a convincing 121–95 win over the Miami Heat. The star duo combined for 48 points, setting the tone on both ends of the floor.

For the first time in a while, Toronto was nearly at full strength. Immanuel Quickley returned after dealing with plantar fasciitis, while Sandro Mamukelashvili and rookie Collin Murray-Boyles were cleared to play just before tip-off. The only absence remained Chucky Hepburn, who continues to recover from surgery.

Toronto came out firing in the opening quarter, knocking down 5-of-10 from beyond the arc and putting up 32 points. Ingram was aggressive from the jump, attacking the rim early and often. He opened his night by driving through the lane and finishing a tough left-handed layup over Tyler Herro. Minutes later, he went right back at Herro, this time breaking him down in the post, drawing contact, and converting an and-one. Ingram closed the quarter with 8 points, 2 rebounds, and a steal.

Despite the hot start, Miami kept things close early thanks to Davion Mitchell. The former Raptor scored all nine of his points in the first quarter including a triple.

The second quarter, however, belonged entirely to Toronto’s defense. The Raptors swarmed Miami’s shooters, holding them to just 33.3 percent from the field and 2-of-10 from three. Barnes led the charge, making his presence felt immediately with a strong rejection against a different former Raptor, Norman Powell who tried to get the scoring started for the Heat with an early lay.

Barnes carried that intensity to the offensive end as well. After scoring 7 points in the first quarter, he matched that total in the second, attacking the rim with purpose. He opened the quarter with a strong take against Jaime Jaquez Jr., then closed the half in style, finishing a Quickley feed with a monster two-hand slam before adding an and-one putback. Toronto took a 64–51 lead into halftime.

Jakob Poeltl also anchored the defense brilliantly, limiting Bam Adebayo to just 4 points on 1-of-6 shooting in the first half. In fact, Bam finished his night with just 7 points on 2-13 shooting. He was also held in check from deep, being held to just 1-7 from the three-point line.

The third quarter followed a familiar script. Barnes and Ingram continued to lead the way, combining for 15 points in the frame. Barnes opened the scoring with a smooth euro-step finish through contact, while Ingram kept the offense flowing with efficient scoring.

By the final buzzer, Barnes had filled the stat sheet with 25 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, a steal, and a block. Ingram added 23 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals in a strong all-around performance.

Toronto’s dominance in the paint proved to be the difference. The Raptors relentlessly attacked inside, finishing with 70 points in the paint, more than double Miami’s 34.

Andrew Wiggins was the lone bright spot for the Heat, scoring a team-high 24 points and briefly keeping Miami within reach with back-to-back threes in the third quarter. But he didn’t get enough support to slow Toronto’s momentum.

The Raptors entered the fourth quarter with an 18-point lead, a margin that has been shaky for them at times this season, but this time, they left no doubt. Toronto clamped down defensively once again, holding Miami to just 19 points in the final frame to seal the win.

With the victory, Toronto improves to 3–0 against Miami this season and now sits one step closer to gaining ground in the playoff race, particularly on the Philadelphia 76ers. Meanwhile, the Heat continue to slide, having lost 9 of their last 12 games and looking increasingly locked into the tenth seed.

The two teams will meet again Thursday night in Toronto, where the Raptors will look to complete the season sweep, something they’ve only accomplished twice before, in 2007–08 and 2018–19.
